Gene Munster: Upcoming Macs Critical for Apple’s Future Stability

Given Apple’s recent stock decline, analyst downgrades and yet another fake Steve Jobs health scare, Piper Jaffray advocates that Apple will need to report strong Q4 sales or introduce new products to remain stable.

Piper analyst Gene Munster has recently reported that if Apple does not report strong fiscal numbers come October 21, “the importance of the new Mac increases substantially,” maintaining that Apple will announce refreshed MacBooks including a sub-$1,000 model.

mbp small conceptIn a recent note, Munster added that probability of a redesigned MacBook line has increased following Apple’s guidance of a 31.5% gross margin attributed to forthcoming “lower-margin products.” Munster added, “the product changes we have seen thus far do not warrant such a dramatic decrease in margins.”

Despite Apple’s recent release of new iPods including the price reduced iPod Touch, due to lower NAND memory prices, Munster remained unsettled over Apple’s “overestimated” lower margins. Numerous other analysts who have lowered price targets noting an “obvious economic weakness,” believe that cheaper devices will in turn help Apple’s marketshare.

Munster had also cited Apple’s 31% gross margin guidance for September as being conservative. “That number is being used to reign in Wall Street’s exuberant expectations for Q4 and the December quarter.” Apple has had a history of announcing gross margin guidance below “the actual figures reported,’ as they had noted that the June quarter would see gross margins of 31.5%, when the actual figure was later reported to be 34.8%.

Additionally, we cannot forget about Apple’s long-term revenue growth from global expansion with the iPhone 3G. While Apple’s upcoming notebook line definitely holds a big place in Apple’s upcoming financial performance, it’s too early to discredit additional cores of the company, such as iPhone, iPod and iTunes. Apple will be reporting its 4th Quarter Earnings Results on Tuesday, October 21st.

Yes, if Apple never introduces a new model, then sales will go down. What an insightful analysis.
