Apple Has Stopped Mac Mini Shipments, Finally Discontinued?

Gizmodo is reporting that according to two retailers in Europe, Apple has stopped shipping the Mac Mini, and told them not to expect any new units.

mac mini dead

According to Giz, the Mac Mini may be pronounced dead (finally?) as soon as today’s Apple Q4 Earnings Call. The Mac Mini is currently Apple’s least successful computer, in terms of sales, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see this long time fledgling product get the axe. As sad as it may be.

“two major retailers in Europe have confirmed to me that they can’t order any more of the little computers. While this could signal an updated model coming in, they have been told by Apple to expect no more of it. Their impression is that—once again—the Mac Mini may be dead dead DEAD for real, even while you can still order it at the Apple Store,” Jesus Diaz explains for Gizmodo.

Introduced at Macworld 2005, the Mac Mini was marketed as the “most affordable Mac ever.” It was developed by Apple to provide a cheap alternative to those not needing the power of a Mac Pro, making it easy for PC users to purchase, and switch to the Macintosh platform.

The last update that the Mac Mini got was in November 2007, and as Giz points out, it’s pretty outdated compared to what is available now. “Unlike the rest of the Mac hardware, it lacks 802.11n support, uses the older 667 MHz front side bus and 945GM chipset, which is two generations behind everything else,” Diaz explains.

Apple will be reporting Q4 Earnings Results today at 2:00pm PT/5:00pm ET. If you are planning on listening to the webcast, please make sure you have QuickTime installed before the event begins.

Are you sure they arent going to do a refresh with the imacs? Make the
“most affordable mac ever” – more affordable? I doubt they are going to cut their least expensive mac on an economic downturn…just my 2 cents

Apple has never been a company to focus on cheaper goods. they continue to deliver expensive products at a premium, and you pay for the quality. they know that.

the bottom line is, nobody uses the mac mini, and the imac can handle a lot of work power. but it’s in-configurable. what’s needed is a mac pro mini, something in between the imac and the gigantic mac pro that can be targeted at pro-sumers.

PRO-SUMERS people !!! COME ON !!!! professional + consumer = PROSUMER !!! Apple needs to directly HIT this market.

Apple needs the Mac mini ande also a prosumer model (as Lorenzo points out).

There are simply a huge amount of people who wnat MACs and already have monitors keyboards, or wnat them to plug in LCD TV’s for home cinema, or just have choice or whatever.

Mark my words.. the Mini aint dead, just a replacment is comming… (Apple aint dumb).
